We’re half way through the year and this usually brings with it concerns about children experiencing that dreaded ‘mid-year slump’ with parents wracking their brains on how to motivate children at school again after a strong start to the year. 

By the middle of the school year, many parents begin noticing changes in their children’s energy, confidence, and enthusiasm for learning.  Homework suddenly becomes more difficult. Motivation dips. Mornings feel harder. Even learners who started the year eager and engaged may begin showing signs of stress, emotional fatigue, or discouragement.

This “mid-year slump” is incredibly common among learners of all ages. After months of academic pressure, busy routines, assessments, social challenges, and growing expectations, many children simply begin feeling mentally and emotionally exhausted.

Importantly, a child losing motivation at school does not necessarily mean they are lazy or incapable. Often, it is a sign that they need renewed support, encouragement, balance, and individual attention to help them regain confidence and momentum.

What Does the Mid-Year Slump Look Like?

The signs can vary from child to child and across different age groups. Younger learners may become emotional, resistant to homework, or clingy at school drop-off. Older learners may withdraw, procrastinate, lose confidence, or become increasingly stressed about marks and exams.

Some common signs include:

• A sudden lack of enthusiasm for school
• Increased frustration or emotional outbursts
• Difficulty concentrating
• Resistance to studying or homework
• Anxiety around tests or assessments
• Feeling “too tired” all the time
• Spending more time on screens or avoiding responsibilities
• Declining confidence in their abilities

Sometimes, what appears to be laziness is actually discouragement or emotional exhaustion.  Children often struggle to communicate these feelings clearly. Instead, the stress shows itself through behaviour changes, irritability, or disengagement.

Why Mid-Year Can Feel So Difficult for Learners

Modern learners face significant pressure from an early age. Academic expectations continue to grow while children also navigate friendships, extracurricular commitments, technology distractions, and social comparison.

By the middle of the year, many learners feel as though they have been “running a race” for months without a real opportunity to slow down emotionally.

In larger classroom environments, children can sometimes begin to feel unseen or hesitant to ask for help when they start falling behind or losing confidence. Small struggles can quietly grow into bigger challenges if they are not noticed early.

This is why personalised support matters so much.

When teachers truly know their learners as individuals, they are often able to recognise changes in behaviour, confidence, or motivation long before report cards reveal a problem. Strong relationships between teachers, parents, and learners create an environment where children feel safe enough to ask questions, seek help, and regain confidence.

How Parents Can Help Children Regain Motivation

The good news is that the mid-year slump is usually temporary – a ‘blip’ on the radar which thankfully means that small, very intentional changes at home can make a significant difference.

1. Focus on Effort, Not Only On Results

Children who feel constant pressure to perform may become fearful of failure and lose motivation altogether. Celebrate consistency, improvement, and effort rather than focusing only on marks.

Encouragement builds confidence, and confident learners are more likely to stay engaged.

2. Rebuild Healthy Routines

By mid-year, routines often become less structured. Sleep schedules shift, screen time increases, and homework habits become inconsistent.

Simple routines around sleep, study time, meals, and downtime help children feel emotionally secure and mentally prepared.

3. Break Tasks Into Smaller Steps

Large assignments and exam preparation can feel overwhelming. Help children divide work into smaller, manageable ‘bite-size’ sections with regular breaks in between.  

Small achievements create momentum and bring the ‘finish line’ into focus and far more attainable..

4. Prioritise Emotional Wellbeing

Sometimes children do not need more pressure, they need more connection.  Take time to talk, listen, and check in emotionally. Ask open-ended questions about school, friendships, and how they are feeling rather than focusing only on academics.  When it comes to teenagers, take the time to consistently just sit with them – without speaking – you will be amazed at the topics of conversation they initiate and what they open up about after a while. 

Children who feel emotionally supported are often better equipped to cope with academic stress.

5. Encourage Balance

Rest, creativity, outdoor activity, and family time are essential parts of healthy learning. Children cannot perform at their best when they are mentally exhausted.  Balanced learners are often more motivated learners.  At MPS we encourage our learners to become Active Readers – a concept adopted through our partnership with Keller Education. Active Readers are learners who find a balance between enjoying activities like surfing, swimming, playing, cycling, etc. with at least 20 minutes of reading every day.  We encourage our parents to become actively involved in encouraging their children to accomplish this.

6. Help Children Manage Exam Stress

For many learners, the middle of the year also brings increased anxiety around tests and exams. Even capable children can begin doubting themselves when academic pressure starts building.

Parents can help by creating a calm and supportive environment during exam periods. Encourage preparation and consistency rather than perfection. Help children create manageable study schedules, ensure they get enough sleep, and remind them that their worth is not defined by marks alone.

When children feel emotionally supported during stressful academic periods, they are often better able to stay focused, motivated, and confident.

“As you prepare for your test or exam, remember that you do not have to carry the pressure alone. You can pray and ask God to give you wisdom, peace, focus, and strength while you study and write your exam. Trust that He will guide you and help you do your best. No matter the outcome, your value and identity are found in Him.” says Antoinette.”

“This is perfectly illustrated in Proverbs 3 verses 5 and 6 – ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.’” concludes Antoinette.

There is no doubt that progress and change are inevitable and at MPS we are keenly aware of this and as a result MPS recently totally re-imagined the way we educate our learners. While remaining committed to our foundation which is our Christian faith and principles, we recognised a need to reinvent the way we educate in order to equip our learners not only with knowledge but more importantly with the emotional and social skills needed to deal with the fast pace of change currently experienced in the world.

At MPS we strive to teach our learners to embrace change and to become #ChangeMakers – to be the ones effecting change in the world rather than being affected by it.

What kind of world are our graduates facing?

Change and progress in today’s world is happening exponentially and that at a rate, never seen before – some say even more dramatic than that of the Industrial Revolution. There is no doubt that the world is currently in the midst of a Digital revolution – or as it is popularly termed “4IR” (4^th Industrial Revolution). This revolution brings with it transformation in the scope of future careers, with some traditional career options falling away, creating a totally new landscape on the job front.

What does this mean in terms of education?

Does it mean a revolution on the Education front? YES, most definitely!
A recent World Economic Forum report entitled “Catalysing Education 4.0: Investing in the Future of Learning for a Human-Centric Recovery” (May 2022) incorporates a vision to prepare students for the economies of the future – the vision is referred to as Education 4.0. The report stresses a global need for education to be re-imagined – for the focus in Education to be shifted to putting learners at the centre of learning and also on the wide variety of emotional and social skills needed to achieve success in the world of 4IR.

The report reflects MPS’ type of thinking and reaffirms that we are definitely on the right trajectory for the future!

What does the #ChangeMaker revolution look like?

The first steps in affecting real change at MPS was to acknowledge the need for change and accept the pervasive nature of technology in the world as well as changes in teaching methodology.

The next steps were to figure out what changes to bring in, in order to make a real difference to our learners so as to ensure their best chance of success in the future world of tomorrow.  We realised that key elements of how we teach needed to change and our teachers need to guide and facilitate rather than instruct.

Another key element to be introduced was “High Touch Education”.  High Touch Education is primarily focused on personalised teaching and the cultivation of students’ higher order thinking skills (understanding, applying, analysing, evaluating and creating / synthesising) and socio-emotional growth – technology comes second to this on our list of educational priorities.

While we accept the high-tech nature of the world we firmly believe developing children and adolescents need more “High Touch” rather than High Tech and that this type of education is far more important and effective

Soft skills form a large part of High Touch Education and are going to be vital in the future working world and the ability to take responsibility for how we work with others in teams and in the workplace in future will be a key factor in determining our success. Therefore, as teachers we need to focus on developing interpersonal skills, resilience, originality, initiative and emotional intelligence in our learners.

How do we turn thinking into reality?

It’s easy to talk about change but how do we ‘practice what we preach’?
We have an exceptional team at MPS who ‘lead by example’ and actively live out the Christian principles which the school is based on every day and thereby encourage our learners to do the same.

Our caring teachers inspire and encourage creativity and curiosity in the classroom thereby giving each child the opportunity to be active participants in the learning process and to be responsible and accountable for their part in the process.

Teachers also work alongside children and show them how to learn collaboratively from each other. A strong thread which runs throughout this process at MPS is to instill in our learners a passion for reading and learning and to embrace the idea of their education continuing for a lifetime, not just for the duration of their journey through the education system.

We are also proud to be a Keller partner school and inspire and encourage our learners to read and be active through implementation of the Keller Methodology to teaching with an Active Reader programme in place of a homework policy.

When choosing a school for your child – is the closest school necessarily the best option?

Choosing the right school for your child is one of the toughest decisions faced by parents. It’s a decision faced not once, but in most cases around three times in your child’s school career.

First there’s the decision as to which pre-school will be the safest and most nurturing and with the best approach to teaching little ones. Then comes the even more daunting choice of primary school and eventually high school.

There are so many key factors which play a part in these decisions and things can get quite complicated in the process.

• education – school’s academic track record, quality of education offered, teaching methods, approach to education as a whole, curriculum
• bang for your buck – personal finances, cost of school fees, sibling discounts, value for money, long-term affordability
• ethos and culture of the school – discipline and even the religious grounding of the school
• environment and safety – are my children going to be in a safe environment that promotes learning while ensuring they are secure?
• sport and extra-murals on offer
• the school run – juggling family logistics around school closing times, aftercare times, and extramural practice times
• and the dreaded distance and traffic factor

• A school’s approach to education – is it well-balanced and holistic or is it purely about educating and achieving the best pass rate,
• School ethos and values – does the school have Christian values and ethos?
• Quality of education – what curriculum does the school follow and what is their approach to teaching?
• The school environment – does the environment encourage learning and a sense of well being? The extremes on the school environment scale are either too modern ‘high-tech’, cold and clinical or dilapidated and run down.
• Class size – when it comes to class size, smaller is always better! Children can end up ‘lost’ in a larger class, struggle to make friends and can even end up falling further and further behind due to a lack of personal attention.
• Safety and security – in today’s world this has to be at the top of our list and plays an important part in your personal day-to-day life. You can get on with your day, secure in the knowledge that your child is safe throughout their school day.

Teachers are the ones who know your child as well as you do, albeit within very different parameters.  They get to spend a large portion of each day with the learners and get to know a different side to them.  Thanks to our small classes and nurturing environment they are privileged to get to know each learner on a level which is unheard of in most mainstream schools.  They know each child’s strengths, weaknesses, fears and character and are often the ones lying awake at night pondering…. the child who hurt themselves today, the child who is unwell, the child who is struggling with a particular problem, the child who is finding it hard to fit in, the child who made them laugh, the child that achieved a milestone today!

If you happen to chat to them and ask them ‘is it worthwhile?’ they won’t bat an eyelid in their response which would be something along the lines of “I wouldn’t change it for the world”.

Long work days, short weekends and the general rush of day-to-day life with the added stresses of worrying about your child’s overall development, academic progress and general well-being and happiness are all “part-and-parcel” of parenthood.

Being a “good”, attentive, super-parent on top of it all is an incredible achievement.

The MPS Collaboration

The MPS collaborative ‘magic’ happens in the space created when parents and teachers acknowledge each other’s struggles, points of view, their ‘humanity’ and can deal with each other respectfully and communicate openly – this is when parent/teacher collaboration not only happens but works!  

MPS’ recent collaboration with Keller Education to implement our Primary School “no homework” policy and associated Active Reader campaign, is just one example of how we want to work towards making our learners’ and parents’ lives not only easier and better but rather the best!

While many South African schools are having to ‘play catch-up’ after the devastating impact of COVID-19 education disruptions, the learners at Melkbosstrand Private School (MPS) do not have to. MPS learners are not subjected to having to join in this crazy race to catch-up thanks to careful planning and the implementation of pro-active safety measures, a workable COVID workplace plan and practical strategies throughout all grades which ensured that school continued, regardless, throughout the pandemic.

Over the Covid period statistics portrayed a dismal picture of some 400,000 to 500,000 learners reportedly having dropped out of school altogether with the total number estimated around 750,000. 

MPS, as with all schools, was faced with the same Covid-hurdles but the difference lay in its planning, actions and strategies to overcome them. 

One such example is when the Department of Basic Education cancelled June 2021 examinations for high school and Matric pupils. The proposed reasoning behind Minister Angie Motshekga’s decision was that cancelling the June exams would allow more time for learners and schools to catch-up on academic time which was lost due to schools being locked-down. MPS was bold enough to proceed with the normal June examinations as we were confident in our academic and curriculum coverage and believed that this would better prepare the learners for the important September and November final examinations.

While many schools had to resort to desperate measures and only see certain grades on alternate days, MPS learners had the privilege to have not missed a single academic school day of teaching since the end of the hard-lockdown on 1 June 2020 thanks to being able to move to remote or online schooling when necessary.

Several media articles also recently reported on research that has been done into the impact of Covid 19 on education and how the outcomes of the research can assist educators to formulate a practical plan to tackle the backlog faced by the majority of schools. This should, however, in our opinion, not include decreasing the quality and standards any further, changing the assessment criteria and amending the curriculum to try and catch up the lost academic time and content as appears to be the norm. 

“Fortune favors the Bold” – implementing the IEB Curriculum

Not only was it the pro-active approach at MPS that saved the day for our learners but MPS also took the bold decision to change to and implement the IEB curriculum in 2022 which we believe is in the best interest of our learners and their future. 

We are very proud of our teachers and staff who excelled and worked tirelessly to ensure that 100% of the old CAPS curriculum was covered and completed for 2020 and 2021. We also would like to recognise the fortitude and perseverance of our students throughout these unprecedented, trying times.

At MPS we understand the challenges of the implementation of the new IEB curriculum, but as in the past, we continue to strive for academic excellence!

ECD, and for that matter all schooling, should be about creating a deep-thinking space full of infinite possibilities, which Noah’s Ark at MPS absolutely fulfils. Noah’s Ark, alongside the Keller Education methodology, is leading the way in play-based, child-centred learning which is based on first world education methodology and thinking. The results achieved with this type of learning speak for themselves – our learners are confident, independent and self-assured which gives them a brilliant foundation for the educational phases to follow.

Young children learn by touching, hearing, seeing, smelling and tasting and our daily programme is full of opportunities to discover and explore. Using the Keller methodology, we stand by the idea that we should stop identifying what the child can’t do and rather teach the child “how to do”. Our continuous assessment, in the form of a term report and a parent feedback session, is based on five categories: communication and collaboration, pro-social, interdependence and dependence, posture and “my place in space”.

Culture at NSA

At Noah’s Ark, we are all about celebrating our culture and encouraging our children to embrace their creativity and natural talent to forge ahead in developing their skills, knowledge, attitudes and values. We believe that from the very beginning of their school careers, children should be the focus and that they should be allowed to discover their talent in the cultural department. We proudly encourage children through daily art lessons which follow a specific theme but during which they are able to create their own masterpieces in their own way. We are also extremely privileged to have ballet and modern dancing lessons at our school, where the learners are able to express themselves through dance. 

NSA’s child-centred facilities and resources

Noah’s Ark is a child’s paradise. Our pre-primary is nestled in a lovely farm environment. Every classroom has their own age-appropriate playground that encourages the development of gross motor skills, sensory explorationand socialisation skills. Our farm animals are an essential part of our daily learning as each grade is allocated a day to feed the animals. This is the beginning of the development of their sense of responsibility towards the world around them and nature as they learn how to feed, care for and love the animals in our care.

The Melkbosstrand Private School (MPS) Brand recently underwent a metamorphosis of sorts – emerging after the process with a brand new look, renewed focus and strength.

The Re-imagining of MPS was not an exercise in convoluted marketing jargon to project an augmented image of the school, but a quest to authentically articulate who we are, and what we are already doing well. Our months and months of research and interrogation lead us down the following path…

Our Proud Affiliations – MPS has affiliations which also make us rather distinctive.

Firstly our recent introduction of the IEB curriculum – MPS has received IEB approval and acceptance to start with the implementation of the IEB curriculum in 2022.  MPS Primary School is affiliated with IEB while our High School is registered with IEB and the first Grade 12’s to write the IEB exams will be the class of 2024.  Secondly, our newly implemented Keller Education Active Readers campaign – the campaign is aimed at encouraging learners to Be Active by – spending afternoons playing, surfing, chilling, being with friends, walking on the beach, skateboarding, riding your bicycle, enjoying sport AND to Be Readers by –  spending at least 20 minutes a day reading a book (5 days a week – in your home language and 2 days a week – in your first additional language).

Melkbosstrand Private School is unique and stands out from its counterparts for several reasons – one of these being that we are focused on providing High Touch education in today’s High Tech world.

What is High Touch education and why all the recent interest and hype about it and more importantly why does MPS believe that focusing on and providing this type of education is key to the future of its students and the world?

– children are trained to master new technology but are severely under-equipped and do not have the necessary skills to deal with or cope in today’s world.

In layman’s terms – children were being released into the world fully capable of handling the technology they are surrounded with but not at all able to handle each other and their fellow man – working in a team, collaborating, communicating and self-regulation skills were all lacking.
