We’re half way through the year and this usually brings with it concerns about children experiencing that dreaded ‘mid-year slump’ with parents wracking their brains on how to motivate children at school again after a strong start to the year.

By the middle of the school year, many parents begin noticing changes in their children’s energy, confidence, and enthusiasm for learning. Homework suddenly becomes more difficult. Motivation dips. Mornings feel harder. Even learners who started the year eager and engaged may begin showing signs of stress, emotional fatigue, or discouragement.

This “mid-year slump” is incredibly common among learners of all ages. After months of academic pressure, busy routines, assessments, social challenges, and growing expectations, many children simply begin feeling mentally and emotionally exhausted.

Importantly, a child losing motivation at school does not necessarily mean they are lazy or incapable. Often, it is a sign that they need renewed support, encouragement, balance, and individual attention to help them regain confidence and momentum.

At Melkbosstrand Private School, we believe supporting learner wellbeing is just as important as supporting academic achievement, especially during the more challenging seasons of the school year.

“Children stay motivated when they feel safe and supported, and this sparks that excitement to learn. In the early years especially, confidence and encouragement play a vital role in helping learners develop a positive relationship with school,” says Mrs Antoinette Gauché , head of the ECD and Foundation phases at MPS.

What Does the Mid-Year Slump Look Like?

The signs can vary from child to child and across different age groups. Younger learners may become emotional, resistant to homework, or clingy at school drop-off. Older learners may withdraw, procrastinate, lose confidence, or become increasingly stressed about marks and exams.

Some common signs include:

A sudden lack of enthusiasm for school

Increased frustration or emotional outbursts

Difficulty concentrating

Resistance to studying or homework

Anxiety around tests or assessments

Feeling “too tired” all the time

Spending more time on screens or avoiding responsibilities

Declining confidence in their abilities

Sometimes, what appears to be laziness is actually discouragement or emotional exhaustion. Children often struggle to communicate these feelings clearly. Instead, the stress shows itself through behaviour changes, irritability, or disengagement.

Why Mid-Year Can Feel So Difficult for Learners

Modern learners face significant pressure from an early age. Academic expectations continue to grow while children also navigate friendships, extracurricular commitments, technology distractions, and social comparison.

By the middle of the year, many learners feel as though they have been “running a race” for months without a real opportunity to slow down emotionally.

In larger classroom environments, children can sometimes begin to feel unseen or hesitant to ask for help when they start falling behind or losing confidence. Small struggles can quietly grow into bigger challenges if they are not noticed early.

This is why personalised support matters so much.

When teachers truly know their learners as individuals, they are often able to recognise changes in behaviour, confidence, or motivation long before report cards reveal a problem. Strong relationships between teachers, parents, and learners create an environment where children feel safe enough to ask questions, seek help, and regain confidence.

At MPS, smaller class sizes and individual attention allow educators to better understand each learner’s unique needs, strengths, and challenges. Sometimes, a child simply needs reassurance, encouragement, and someone who notices when they are struggling.

“As academic expectations increase, learners need more than discipline and structure… they need guidance, encouragement, and individual support to help them stay confident and motivated throughout the school year,” says Mr Allan Norton, head of the Intermediate, Senior and FET phases at MPS.

How Parents Can Help Children Regain Motivation

The good news is that the mid-year slump is usually temporary – a ‘blip’ on the radar which thankfully means that small, very intentional changes at home can make a significant difference.

Focus on Effort, Not Only On Results

Children who feel constant pressure to perform may become fearful of failure and lose motivation altogether. Celebrate consistency, improvement, and effort rather than focusing only on marks.

Encouragement builds confidence, and confident learners are more likely to stay engaged.

Rebuild Healthy Routines

By mid-year, routines often become less structured. Sleep schedules shift, screen time increases, and homework habits become inconsistent.

Simple routines around sleep, study time, meals, and downtime help children feel emotionally secure and mentally prepared.

Break Tasks Into Smaller Steps

Large assignments and exam preparation can feel overwhelming. Help children divide work into smaller, manageable ‘bite-size’ sections with regular breaks in between.

Small achievements create momentum and bring the ‘finish line’ into focus and far more attainable..

Prioritise Emotional Wellbeing

Sometimes children do not need more pressure, they need more connection. Take time to talk, listen, and check in emotionally. Ask open-ended questions about school, friendships, and how they are feeling rather than focusing only on academics. When it comes to teenagers, take the time to consistently just sit with them – without speaking – you will be amazed at the topics of conversation they initiate and what they open up about after a while.

Children who feel emotionally supported are often better equipped to cope with academic stress.

Encourage Balance

Rest, creativity, outdoor activity, and family time are essential parts of healthy learning. Children cannot perform at their best when they are mentally exhausted. Balanced learners are often more motivated learners. At MPS we encourage our learners to become Active Readers – a concept adopted through our partnership with Keller Education. Active Readers are learners who find a balance between enjoying activities like surfing, swimming, playing, cycling, etc. with at least 20 minutes of reading every day. We encourage our parents to become actively involved in encouraging their children to accomplish this.

Help Children Manage Exam Stress

For many learners, the middle of the year also brings increased anxiety around tests and exams. Even capable children can begin doubting themselves when academic pressure starts building.

Parents can help by creating a calm and supportive environment during exam periods. Encourage preparation and consistency rather than perfection. Help children create manageable study schedules, ensure they get enough sleep, and remind them that their worth is not defined by marks alone.

When children feel emotionally supported during stressful academic periods, they are often better able to stay focused, motivated, and confident.

“As you prepare for your test or exam, remember that you do not have to carry the pressure alone. You can pray and ask God to give you wisdom, peace, focus, and strength while you study and write your exam. Trust that He will guide you and help you do your best. No matter the outcome, your value and identity are found in Him.” says Antoinette.”

“This is perfectly illustrated in Proverbs 3 verses 5 and 6 – ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.’” concludes Antoinette.

Creating an Environment Where Children Can Thrive

Every child experiences difficult seasons differently. Some need academic support. Others need reassurance, routine, patience, or simply the confidence that someone believes in them.

The middle of the school year can either become a period where learners disengage or an opportunity to reset, reconnect, and rebuild confidence.

At MPS, we believe children thrive in environments where they feel seen, supported, encouraged, and valued as individuals. Through smaller classes, meaningful teacher relationships, and a balanced approach to education, learners are given the opportunity to grow both academically and personally.

As the second half of the year begins, a little support, understanding, and encouragement can go a long way in helping children rediscover their confidence and motivation.

Enrolments at Melkbosstrand Private School are open throughout the year, with space available in various grades.

We live in an age where answers are instant, information is abundant and effort is optional as technology can do the thinking for us. The impact on the world is great and most things, including education, are definitely changing. The rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) worldwide has seen its use in education, by both educators and learners, increasing. Learners now have access to tools that can generate essays, solve complex problems, and complete tasks in a matter of seconds. While these advancements offer undeniable convenience, they also raise an important question: What happens to character when children no longer have to struggle, think deeply, or persevere?

The Age of Easy Answers

For many students, the learning process is quietly shifting. Why spend time working through a difficult problem when a tool can provide the answer instantly? Why make the effort to draft and refine when a polished response can be generated in seconds?

Over time, this convenience can begin to reshape how children approach learning:

Effort starts to feel unnecessary

Struggle is avoided rather than embraced

The goal becomes completion, not understanding

In that shift, something essential is at risk.

The Hidden Cost of Shortcuts

Education has never been just about results, it has always been about the process of learning. It is in the process that children learn to think critically, solve problems, build resilience and develop confidence in their own abilities

When shortcuts replace that process, learners may begin to rely on external tools instead of their own thinking, lose confidence in what they can do independently and ultimately miss opportunities to develop perseverance and focus. Perhaps most concerning is the subtle normalisation of the idea of cutting corners where doing the work becomes less important than simply submitting it.

Why Discipline Still Matters

Some may see discipline as being all about rigid control but it’s not. It is about commitment to values and growth.

Discipline involves the willingness to:

Stay focused when something feels difficult

Keep trying when the answer is not immediate

Take pride in effort, not just outcome

In a world that increasingly rewards speed, discipline teaches children that meaningful learning takes time. It builds a deeper confidence, the kind that comes not from getting the right answer quickly, but from knowing YOU worked for it.

“We don’t want learners who are dependent on tools. We want learners who are confident in their own thinking.” says Mr Allan Norton, head of Intermediate, Senior and FET phases at MPS.

Integrity in a World of Instant Results

Alongside discipline, integrity is another value under pressure today. When students have easy access to AI-generated work, they are faced with choices such as “Do I submit work that reflects my own thinking or do I rely on something I did not create?”

They are facing making these types of choices alone, without guidance and supervision.

These moments matter.

They shape how children understand honesty, responsibility, and accountability. Over time, repeated choices, whether towards integrity or convenience, begin to define and ‘cement’ character.

Education Beyond Information

At its heart, education is not simply about acquiring knowledge. It is about shaping who a child becomes.

Education instills values such as:

Respect – for teachers, for learning, and for oneself

Kindness – in how we interact and support others

Discipline – in how we approach challenges

Integrity – in how we take ownership of our work

These are not formed through convenience, they are developed through effort, guidance, and meaningful human connection with teachers, principals, leaders, parents and peers.

“Education is not just about what children know, but who they become through the process of learning.” says Mrs Antoinette Gauche, head of ECD and Foundation phases at MPS.

“Instilling values begins in the ECD phase at Noah’s Ark Pre-Primary and is consistently conveyed in all our phases, right through to our matriculants completing their education journey,” she adds.

A Values-Based Approach in a Changing World

At Melkbosstrand Private School, we recognise that technology, including A, is part-and-parcel of the world our children are growing up in. However, we are equally clear on this: Technology should support learning, not replace it.

Our approach is one of ‘High Touch education’ for a high tech world, intentionally grounded in:

Encouraging independent thinking

Supporting learners through challenge, not removing it

Reinforcing honest effort and accountability

Building strong relationships where each child is known and guided

In a smaller, high-touch environment, learners are not left to navigate these challenges alone. They are supported in developing both the skills and the character they need to thrive.

Preparing Children for the Future

The future will undoubtedly be shaped by technology. Success in that future will not, however, belong to those who simply have access to the best tools.

It will belong to those who can:

Think critically

Act with integrity

Show resilience in the face of challenge

Build meaningful relationships

These are deeply human qualities – ones that cannot be automated or generated.

Choosing Character Over Convenience

In an age where convenience is everywhere, choosing values-based education is both a challenge and a commitment.

It is a choice to prioritise effort over ease, growth over shortcuts and character over quick results because while shortcuts may offer immediate outcomes, they do not build lasting foundations. It is on those foundations that confident, capable, and principled young people are formed.

“MPS teachers, in partnership with Keller Education, will be attending a course on AI that will equip them to use using AI confidently without outsourcing thinking, build student discernment not dependency, understand AI’s double-edged impact on skills, help lead parent conversation and enquiries with clarity and also help contribute to the school’s AI policy which is something we will be working on in the near future,” says Mr Oloff Dreyer, CEO of MPS.

“At MPS, we remain committed to nurturing learners who are not only academically prepared, but grounded in values that will guide them for life,” he added.

Through small class sizes, individual attention, and a strong emphasis on discipline, respect, and integrity, we create an environment where children are encouraged to think for themselves, take ownership of their learning, and grow into individuals of character.

If your family is one who values an education that goes beyond the surface, one that prepares children not just for exams, but for life, we encourage you to contact us and find out how to become part of the education journey at MPS – enrolments are open all year round!

There is no doubt that progress and change are inevitable and at MPS we are keenly aware of this and as a result MPS recently totally re-imagined the way we educate our learners. While remaining committed to our foundation which is our Christian faith and principles, we recognised a need to reinvent the way we educate in order to equip our learners not only with knowledge but more importantly with the emotional and social skills needed to deal with the fast pace of change currently experienced in the world.

At MPS we strive to teach our learners to embrace change and to become #ChangeMakers – to be the ones effecting change in the world rather than being affected by it.

What kind of world are our graduates facing?

Change and progress in today’s world is happening exponentially and that at a rate, never seen before – some say even more dramatic than that of the Industrial Revolution. There is no doubt that the world is currently in the midst of a Digital revolution – or as it is popularly termed “4IR” (4th Industrial Revolution). This revolution brings with it transformation in the scope of future careers, with some traditional career options falling away, creating a totally new landscape on the job front.

What does this mean in terms of education?

Does it mean a revolution on the Education front? YES, most definitely!
A recent World Economic Forum report entitled “Catalysing Education 4.0: Investing in the Future of Learning for a Human-Centric Recovery” (May 2022) incorporates a vision to prepare students for the economies of the future – the vision is referred to as Education 4.0. The report stresses a global need for education to be re-imagined – for the focus in Education to be shifted to putting learners at the centre of learning and also on the wide variety of emotional and social skills needed to achieve success in the world of 4IR.

The report reflects MPS’ type of thinking and reaffirms that we are definitely on the right trajectory for the future!

What does the #ChangeMaker revolution look like?

The first steps in affecting real change at MPS was to acknowledge the need for change and accept the pervasive nature of technology in the world as well as changes in teaching methodology.

The next steps were to figure out what changes to bring in, in order to make a real difference to our learners so as to ensure their best chance of success in the future world of tomorrow. We realised that key elements of how we teach needed to change and our teachers need to guide and facilitate rather than instruct.

Another key element to be introduced was “High Touch Education”. High Touch Education is primarily focused on personalised teaching and the cultivation of students’ higher order thinking skills (understanding, applying, analysing, evaluating and creating / synthesising) and socio-emotional growth – technology comes second to this on our list of educational priorities.

While we accept the high-tech nature of the world we firmly believe developing children and adolescents need more “High Touch” rather than High Tech and that this type of education is far more important and effective

Soft skills form a large part of High Touch Education and are going to be vital in the future working world and the ability to take responsibility for how we work with others in teams and in the workplace in future will be a key factor in determining our success. Therefore, as teachers we need to focus on developing interpersonal skills, resilience, originality, initiative and emotional intelligence in our learners.

How do we turn thinking into reality?

It’s easy to talk about change but how do we ‘practice what we preach’?
We have an exceptional team at MPS who ‘lead by example’ and actively live out the Christian principles which the school is based on every day and thereby encourage our learners to do the same.

Our caring teachers inspire and encourage creativity and curiosity in the classroom thereby giving each child the opportunity to be active participants in the learning process and to be responsible and accountable for their part in the process.

Teachers also work alongside children and show them how to learn collaboratively from each other. A strong thread which runs throughout this process at MPS is to instill in our learners a passion for reading and learning and to embrace the idea of their education continuing for a lifetime, not just for the duration of their journey through the education system.

We are also proud to be a Keller partner school and inspire and encourage our learners to read and be active through implementation of the Keller Methodology to teaching with an Active Reader programme in place of a homework policy.

Our teachers take each and every opportunity to practice skills-based teaching – from the classroom right through to the sports field

Launching into the future with MPS – 2023, here we come!

The idea of raising our learners to be #ChangeMakers is central to the core of MPS.

We believe in equipping our #ChangeMakers with the right emotional and social skills along with the necessary “hard” skills and then, from a firm base of Christian principles, we launch and release them into the world on the right trajectory in order for them to effect real, positive change in the world and to enjoy success in the future.

Would you like to join us on this education journey into the future? Enrolments for 2023 and 2024 are open and we still have spaces available in all our grades.

Choosing the right school for your child is one of the toughest decisions faced by parents. It’s a decision faced not once, but in most cases around three times in your child’s school career.

First there’s the decision as to which pre-school will be the safest and most nurturing and with the best approach to teaching little ones. Then comes the even more daunting choice of primary school and eventually high school.

There are so many key factors which play a part in these decisions and things can get quite complicated in the process.

education – school’s academic track record, quality of education offered, teaching methods, approach to education as a whole, curriculum

bang for your buck – personal finances, cost of school fees, sibling discounts, value for money, long-term affordability

ethos and culture of the school – discipline and even the religious grounding of the school

environment and safety – are my children going to be in a safe environment that promotes learning while ensuring they are secure?

the school run – juggling family logistics around school closing times, aftercare times, and extramural practice times

and the dreaded distance and traffic factor

When prioritizing all of the above different parents will have different requirements and expectations and thus very different lists, but often it is the last one on the list above – the traffic factor – which inevitably gets placed at the top (if not close to the to the top) of parents’ lists and for understandable reason.

Living in a city and dealing with traffic congestion throws a number of factors into the mix with parents having to take distance from home, traffic en route, pick-up time and distance from work, etc. into consideration.

In our experience, however, basing the decision mainly on the convenience of having your child at a school close to home or work is not advisable. It should rather be viewed as an added bonus if you find the right school, which ticks all the other more important boxes, that happens to be in a good location when it comes to the dreaded traffic factor.

Which factors really matter when choosing the right school?

Here’s a list of our top 6, to help you:

A school’s approach to education – is it well-balanced and holistic or is it purely about educating and achieving the best pass rate,

School ethos and values – does the school have Christian values and ethos?

Quality of education – what curriculum does the school follow and what is their approach to teaching?

The school environment – does the environment encourage learning and a sense of well being? The extremes on the school environment scale are either too modern ‘high-tech’, cold and clinical or dilapidated and run down.

Class size – when it comes to class size, smaller is always better! Children can end up ‘lost’ in a larger class, struggle to make friends and can even end up falling further and further behind due to a lack of personal attention.

Safety and security – in today’s world this has to be at the top of our list and plays an important part in your personal day-to-day life. You can get on with your day, secure in the knowledge that your child is safe throughout their school day.

The MPS Difference

MPS, as with all schools, was faced with the same Covid-hurdles but the difference lay in its planning, actions and strategies to overcome them.

One such example is when the Department of Basic Education cancelled June 2021 examinations for high school and Matric pupils. The proposed reasoning behind Minister Angie Motshekga’s decision was that cancelling the June exams would allow more time for learners and schools to catch-up on academic time which was lost due to schools being locked-down. MPS was bold enough to proceed with the normal June examinations as we were confident in our academic and curriculum coverage and believed that this would better prepare the learners for the important September and November final examinations.

While many schools had to resort to desperate measures and only see certain grades on alternate days, MPS learners had the privilege to have not missed a single academic school day of teaching since the end of the hard-lockdown on 1 June 2020 thanks to being able to move to remote or online schooling when necessary.

Several media articles also recently reported on research that has been done into the impact of Covid 19 on education and how the outcomes of the research can assist educators to formulate a practical plan to tackle the backlog faced by the majority of schools. This should, however, in our opinion, not include decreasing the quality and standards any further, changing the assessment criteria and amending the curriculum to try and catch up the lost academic time and content as appears to be the norm.

Deciding on a Pre-School or Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre for your child is possibly one of the most difficult tasks, but an extremely important one, faced by parents.
ECD, and for that matter all schooling, should be about creating a deep-thinking space full of infinite possibilities, which Noah’s Ark at MPS absolutely fulfils. Noah’s Ark, alongside the Keller Education methodology, is leading the way in play-based, child-centred learning which is based on first world education methodology and thinking. The results achieved with this type of learning speak for themselves – our learners are confident, independent and self-assured which gives them a brilliant foundation for the educational phases to follow.

Why play-based learning?
Play is an essential and vital education tool in ECD. When we speak about play we are referring to independent play – driven by curiosity and experimentation, incorporating learning to share and take turns and mastering self-regulation and being able to control emotional outbursts with minimal adult intervention. During play-based learning the teacher/educator, in social situations, needs to be close, but far away enough to give the child the freedom to play independently and learn. All lessons at Noah’s Ark are taught this way, whilst always keeping the individual child’s capability in mind. We teach on the child’s level as this allows them the freedom to think independently, to be innovative, creative and forward-thinking.

We are proud to say that our teachers are fully qualified and are continuously improving themselves by going on courses, attending classes and information evenings about new, innovative developments in learning – a field that is continuously developing and changing in our world. Each of our unique classrooms has a teacher and qualified assistant who make sure your child is safe and content. Our small classes give us the privilege to work with the learners in micro-groups so that each child’s unique education and emotional needs are met and challenged.

Our curriculum:
With our partner, Keller Education, we focus on play-based learning and developing children physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually. By providing interesting and stimulating activities, we prepare learners to embrace the IEB curriculum. Young children learn by touching, hearing, seeing, smelling and tasting and our daily programme is full of opportunities to discover and explore. Using the Keller methodology, we stand by the idea that we should stop identifying what the child can’t do and rather teach the child “how to do”. Our continuous assessment, in the form of a term report and a parent feedback session, is based on five categories: communication and collaboration, pro-social, interdependence and dependence, posture and “my place in space”.

Our class size allocations are as follows:

We proudly encourage children through daily art lessons which follow a specific theme but during which they are able to create their own masterpieces in their own way.
While boasting is not in our nature at Melkbosstrand Private School (MPS) – our long standing record and solid reputation when it comes to Academic Excellence speaks for itself. We are extremely proud of our students, staff and all involved who uphold this high Academic standard every year.

Academic Excellence has always been a key focus of MPS – and the thinking and drive behind our efforts to always be one of the best. However, our goal is not just to purely achieve Academic results for bragging sake; but rather that the hard work put in in the Academic department lays the foundation for our students to believe in themselves and their ability to positively affect the world around them.

This is outlined by the very first line of our Manifesto:

“One pen, held by One student, guided by One teacher, can change the world – and it

is with this belief that we raise and release “ChangeMakers” every single day.”

It is this belief that drives the team at MPS to be the best, to stand out above the rest and

achieve.

What does it take to be one of the best?

MPS is one of the Western Cape’s Top 5 performing schools and we have achieved a 100% Matric Pass Rate every year since our first Grade 12 Class matriculated in 2011 – that’s 11 years of pure excellence!

MPS received IEB approval and acceptance to start with the implementation of the IEB curriculum in 2022 and this will see our first group of Grade 12s writing IEB exams in 2024. The IEB national senior certificate (NSC) is an internationally benchmarked qualification and is quality assured by Umalusi (the council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education). Another key ingredient when it comes to our curriculum is our Umalusi accreditation, awarded to MPS in 2018. Umalusi is one of three quality councils in South Africa whose role is to develop an education framework and manage the standard of qualifications for general and further education and training. Accreditation by Umalusi is a legislative requirement for schools offering the curriculum leading to the National Senior Certificate and is granted by Umalusi to independent schools that participate actively in its quality assurance initiatives and meet the quality assurance and standards in each of the criteria for accreditation.
