We live in an age where answers are instant, information is abundant and effort is optional as technology can do the thinking for us. The impact on the world is great and most things, including education, are definitely changing. The rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) worldwide has seen its use in education, by both educators and learners, increasing. Learners now have access to tools that can generate essays, solve complex problems, and complete tasks in a matter of seconds. While these advancements offer undeniable convenience, they also raise an important question: What happens to character when children no longer have to struggle, think deeply, or persevere?

The Age of Easy Answers

For many students, the learning process is quietly shifting. Why spend time working through a difficult problem when a tool can provide the answer instantly? Why make the effort to draft and refine when a polished response can be generated in seconds?

Over time, this convenience can begin to reshape how children approach learning:

Effort starts to feel unnecessary

Struggle is avoided rather than embraced

The goal becomes completion, not understanding

In that shift, something essential is at risk.

The Hidden Cost of Shortcuts

Education has never been just about results, it has always been about the process of learning. It is in the process that children learn to think critically, solve problems, build resilience and develop confidence in their own abilities

When shortcuts replace that process, learners may begin to rely on external tools instead of their own thinking, lose confidence in what they can do independently and ultimately miss opportunities to develop perseverance and focus. Perhaps most concerning is the subtle normalisation of the idea of cutting corners where doing the work becomes less important than simply submitting it.

Why Discipline Still Matters

Some may see discipline as being all about rigid control but it’s not. It is about commitment to values and growth.

Discipline involves the willingness to:

Stay focused when something feels difficult

Keep trying when the answer is not immediate

Take pride in effort, not just outcome

In a world that increasingly rewards speed, discipline teaches children that meaningful learning takes time. It builds a deeper confidence, the kind that comes not from getting the right answer quickly, but from knowing YOU worked for it.

“We don’t want learners who are dependent on tools. We want learners who are confident in their own thinking.” says Mr Allan Norton, head of Intermediate, Senior and FET phases at MPS.

Integrity in a World of Instant Results

Alongside discipline, integrity is another value under pressure today. When students have easy access to AI-generated work, they are faced with choices such as “Do I submit work that reflects my own thinking or do I rely on something I did not create?”

They are facing making these types of choices alone, without guidance and supervision.

These moments matter.

They shape how children understand honesty, responsibility, and accountability. Over time, repeated choices, whether towards integrity or convenience, begin to define and ‘cement’ character.

Education Beyond Information

At its heart, education is not simply about acquiring knowledge. It is about shaping who a child becomes.

Education instills values such as:

Respect – for teachers, for learning, and for oneself

Kindness – in how we interact and support others

Discipline – in how we approach challenges

Integrity – in how we take ownership of our work

These are not formed through convenience, they are developed through effort, guidance, and meaningful human connection with teachers, principals, leaders, parents and peers.

“Education is not just about what children know, but who they become through the process of learning.” says Mrs Antoinette Gauche, head of ECD and Foundation phases at MPS.

“Instilling values begins in the ECD phase at Noah’s Ark Pre-Primary and is consistently conveyed in all our phases, right through to our matriculants completing their education journey,” she adds.

A Values-Based Approach in a Changing World

At Melkbosstrand Private School, we recognise that technology, including A, is part-and-parcel of the world our children are growing up in. However, we are equally clear on this: Technology should support learning, not replace it.

Our approach is one of ‘High Touch education’ for a high tech world, intentionally grounded in:

Encouraging independent thinking

Supporting learners through challenge, not removing it

Reinforcing honest effort and accountability

Building strong relationships where each child is known and guided

In a smaller, high-touch environment, learners are not left to navigate these challenges alone. They are supported in developing both the skills and the character they need to thrive.

Preparing Children for the Future

The future will undoubtedly be shaped by technology. Success in that future will not, however, belong to those who simply have access to the best tools.

It will belong to those who can:

Think critically

Act with integrity

Show resilience in the face of challenge

Build meaningful relationships

These are deeply human qualities – ones that cannot be automated or generated.

Choosing Character Over Convenience

In an age where convenience is everywhere, choosing values-based education is both a challenge and a commitment.

It is a choice to prioritise effort over ease, growth over shortcuts and character over quick results because while shortcuts may offer immediate outcomes, they do not build lasting foundations. It is on those foundations that confident, capable, and principled young people are formed.

“MPS teachers, in partnership with Keller Education, will be attending a course on AI that will equip them to use using AI confidently without outsourcing thinking, build student discernment not dependency, understand AI’s double-edged impact on skills, help lead parent conversation and enquiries with clarity and also help contribute to the school’s AI policy which is something we will be working on in the near future,” says Mr Oloff Dreyer, CEO of MPS.

“At MPS, we remain committed to nurturing learners who are not only academically prepared, but grounded in values that will guide them for life,” he added.

Through small class sizes, individual attention, and a strong emphasis on discipline, respect, and integrity, we create an environment where children are encouraged to think for themselves, take ownership of their learning, and grow into individuals of character.

If your family is one who values an education that goes beyond the surface, one that prepares children not just for exams, but for life, we encourage you to contact us and find out how to become part of the education journey at MPS – enrolments are open all year round!

Some children eagerly raise their hands in class. Others sit quietly, unsure if their answer is right. Confidence in the classroom is not something every learner naturally possesses. For many children, it develops over time through encouragement, positive experiences and a learning environment where they feel safe to participate and make mistakes.

Imagine a classroom where every learner is known by name, where teachers notice when a child is struggling and celebrate when they succeed. In this kind of environment, learners are far more likely to speak up, ask questions and challenge themselves academically.

One of the factors that plays a surprisingly powerful role in building this kind of confidence is class size. In smaller schools, learners are more likely to feel seen, supported and encouraged, thus creating the ideal environment for confidence to grow.

At Melkbosstrand Private School, small class sizes create a learning environment where every learner is recognised as an individual. Teachers are able to provide meaningful attention, guide personal growth and help learners develop the confidence they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Why Confidence Matters in Education

Confidence plays a powerful role in shaping how children experience learning. A learner who believes in their abilities approaches challenges very differently from one who doubts themselves.

Confident learners are more likely to:

Participate in classroom discussions

Ask questions when they need clarification

Attempt challenging tasks

Share their ideas and perspectives

Take ownership of their learning

Without confidence, even capable learners may hesitate to engage fully in their education.

“When learners feel comfortable and supported in their classroom environment, their confidence naturally grows. That confidence becomes the foundation for academic success and personal development,” explains Mr Allan Norton, Head of Intermediate, Senior and FET phases at MPS.

The Advantage of Smaller Classes

In larger schools, classrooms can often be crowded, often with up to 50 learners in a class, making it extremely difficult for teachers to maintain discipline and give every learner the attention they need.
Smaller classes offer a completely different experience.

Every Child Has a Voice

In a smaller classroom, learners are encouraged to speak up, share ideas and actively participate in discussions. Rather than feeling overlooked, each child has the opportunity to contribute and engage.
For younger learners especially, this sense of participation is crucial. The confidence gained from speaking up in class can have a lasting impact on their communication skills, curiosity and willingness to learn.

Teachers Truly Know Their Learners

Smaller classes allow teachers to build meaningful relationships with their students. They can quickly identify each learner’s emotions, strengths, challenges and individual learning style.

Mrs Antoinette Gauchè, Head of ECD and Foundation phases at MPS, highlights the value of this connection: “When teachers know their learners well, they can support them in a much more personal way. Encouragement at the right moment can make a tremendous difference in helping a child believe in themselves.”

This personalised approach allows teachers to guide learners with the right balance of support and challenge.

Learners Feel Seen and Supported

In a smaller school environment, it is far less likely for a learner to feel lost in the crowd.
Teachers notice when a learner is struggling with emotional issues, celebrate when they succeed and step in with encouragement when confidence needs a boost.

When learners feel safe, supported and understood, they are far more willing to take the academic risks that lead to growth.

Building Confidence at Every Stage of Learning

The benefits of smaller classes extend across every phase of a child’s education.

ECD phase

In the early years, children build confidence through play, exploration and positive reinforcement. In a nurturing, small-class environment, young learners feel safe to express themselves, try new activities and develop independence, all of which lay the foundation for future learning.

Foundation Phase

Young learners gain confidence by exploring, asking questions and participating in activities where their contributions are valued.

Intermediate and Senior Phases

As learners grow older, smaller classes allow for deeper discussions, stronger relationships with teachers and more personalised academic guidance.

High School

Older learners benefit from mentorship, emotional and academic support and the confidence to express their ideas, take initiative and develop leadership skills.

At every stage, a smaller learning environment supports both academic progress, personal and emotional development.

MPS – A Community That Encourages Growth

Confidence does not develop in isolation. It grows within a supportive community where learners feel encouraged by teachers, peers and parents.

At Melkbosstrand Private School, the focus is on creating an emotionally supportive, nurturing and values-driven environment where learners can grow academically, socially and spiritually.

Through small class sizes, individual attention and strong Christian values, the school aims to help every learner discover their strengths and develop the confidence to pursue their goals.

Giving Your Child the Confidence to Thrive

Every child deserves a learning environment where they feel encouraged, supported and inspired to reach their potential.

“For many families, a smaller school environment offers exactly that – a place where learners feel safe, build confidence, develop meaningful relationships and cultivate a lifelong love of learning.” says Mr Oloff Dreyer, CEO of MPS.

“When children learn in an environment where their emotions are considered, valued and supported; their confidence, and their potential, can grow in remarkable ways.” concludes Mr Dreyer.

If you are exploring schooling options for your child, having difficulty with the on-line application placement system, the team at Melkbosstrand Private School would be delighted to welcome you for a visit and share more about our approach to personalised education and holistic development.
Enrolments are open throughout the year, with space available in various grades.

At a time when classrooms are racing toward ever-newer technology, a surprising global shift is taking place. Schools around the world are returning to physical books, handwriting, and traditional learning tools after years of prioritising screens. Even countries long regarded as education pioneers, like Sweden, have begun re-evaluating digital-first classrooms as educators recognise an important truth: innovation only matters when it genuinely improves learning.

For parents, this raises a powerful question: What methods actually help children understand, retain, and enjoy knowledge most effectively?

The Hidden Power of Paper

Research increasingly shows that reading from physical books supports deeper comprehension than reading from screens as applied in many traditional and online schools today. Children tend to absorb information more thoroughly, remember details longer, and develop stronger vocabulary when engaging with printed text. Writing by hand, too, activates cognitive processes linked to memory and conceptual understanding in ways typing simply never will, as well as improving crucial fine-motor skills.

These findings explain why, globally, many schools are rediscovering the value of physical, tactile learning experiences. Books encourage imagination. Handwriting strengthens neural connections. Turning pages slows the mind just enough to think critically – a skill that fast-paced digital scrolling rarely nurtures.

Why Balance Matters More Than Ever

Technology is, of course, a valuable educational tool. Digital resources can enhance lessons, provide interactive opportunities, and expose learners to global information.

“Technology has its place in the world and in education but should never replace a human – a teacher,” says Mr Oloff Dreyer, CEO of MPS.

The key insight emerging worldwide is that balance matters more than novelty. Small classrooms with dedicated teachers that combine structured literacy foundations with carefully integrated technology appear to produce more confident, capable learners and human beings.

The MPS Approach – Literacy First

At Melkbosstrand Private School this balanced philosophy has, since inception in 2006, been part of the educational approach and methodology. Rather than chasing technology trends, we take note and evaluate them while the main focus remains on developing confident readers who don’t just recognise words, they understand, analyse, question, and engage with them deeply.

This approach reflects a deliberate educational philosophy: before learners can successfully use advanced tools, they must first master the essential basic skills that make meaningful learning possible.

“At MPS, we believe that early detection and prevention are key to helping children thrive,” says Antoinette Gauche, head of ECD, Foundation and Intermediate phases at MPS.

“By identifying challenges before they impact learning, we give every child the tools to succeed.”

Some of these ‘tools for success’ include:

Strong Literacy Foundations: Our classrooms prioritise reading, writing, and language development through the Keller methodology. Learners enjoy daily 20-minute reading sessions and guided support from teachers trained by the Tina Cowley Reading Centre, working side by side with children.

Early Screening: Learners from Grade 00 to Grade 3 receive annual eye screenings by Dr Frederik Jansen to detect vision issues early.

Motor Skills Development: Through play-based activities, movement exercises, and the Keller Track, children develop fine and gross motor skills, boosting coordination, confidence, and readiness to learn.

Outdoor Learning & Exploration: Children engage in hands-on play outside the classroom to reinforce concepts, strengthen gross motor skills, and foster curiosity.

Targeted Reading Support: Early identification of reading challenges allows teachers to provide personalised support, helping learners gain fluency, comprehension, and confidence.

“The impact of this prevention-focused approach is celebrated in events like the Grade 3 Pen Licence Ceremony, recognising learners’ progress and achievements – proof that prevention and early support lead to success,” concludes Antoinette.

At Melkbosstrand Private School, our primary school has intentionally replaced traditional homework with a focused programme built around 20 minutes of daily reading.

“Rather than sending learners home with hours of written tasks, we prioritise consistent, meaningful reading practice. This daily habit strengthens vocabulary, comprehension and language confidence in both home and additional languages, without overwhelming children after a full school day, “says Allan Norton, head of Intermediate, Senior and FET phases at MPS.

This approach is grounded in a simple belief: young learners thrive when academic growth and emotional well-being are balanced.

Excessive homework can contribute to stress, anxiety and strained family time. By limiting after-school academic demands, we allow children to:

Rest and recharge

Participate in sport and outdoor play

Spend quality time with family

Develop socially and creatively

Reading for 20 minutes is manageable, purposeful and often becomes a positive shared activity between parent and child, strengthening both literacy and relationships.

“At MPS, we are not lowering expectations; we are being intentional about what truly matters. By focusing on daily reading rather than hours of homework, we build strong academic foundations while protecting the joy, confidence and emotional well-being of our learners,” Allan added.

Electronics vs Pen & Paper

At MPS, we prioritise in-person teaching and the use of physical textbooks and written assignments over heavy reliance on devices. This choice supports both academic focus and emotional well-being.

Learning face-to-face allows teachers to notice emotional cues, offer immediate support and build meaningful relationships with learners. Screens can create distance, while physical interaction fosters connection and trust.

Textbooks and handwritten work also promote deeper concentration and reduce digital distractions. Without constant screen exposure, learners experience less overstimulation, improved focus and healthier emotional regulation.

“There is also value in tangible learning – paging through a book, writing by hand and physically completing an assignment builds confidence, responsibility and a clear sense of progress.” adds Allen.

“At MPS, our approach is intentional: we use technology where appropriate, but we anchor learning in real human connection to ensure our learners grow academically strong, emotionally balanced and socially connected,” concludes Allan.

What All This Means for Your Child’s Future

Educational trends will continue to evolve, but the fundamentals of learning remain remarkably consistent. Children thrive when they can focus, imagine, question, and reflect. All these skills are strengthened through meaningful interaction with books.

The global return to traditional literacy tools isn’t a step backward. It’s a step toward what research has only now confirmed: sometimes the most powerful learning tools are the simplest ones.

January brings more than a new school uniform, stationery, neatly packed lunch boxes, and the excitement of fresh starts. It sets the rhythm for the entire school year. The way children experience the first few days or weeks of school plays a powerful role in shaping their confidence, focus, and academic progress and one of the biggest influences is the learning environment they step into each morning.

At Melkbosstrand Private School (MPS), the start of the year is not a rush or a reset. It’s a carefully planned and supported transition designed to help every learner feel calm, seen, safe and ready to grow.

Why Environment Matters More Than We Realise

A child’s surroundings have a measurable impact on learning, especially in the first term. A peaceful pastoral environment helps children settle quicker, engage more deeply, and begin forming the habits they will rely on throughout the year. When the environment is structured, nurturing, and intentionally designed to create a sense of freedom , children thrive earlier and more consistently.

At MPS, this means small class sizes, consistent routines, and teachers who take the time to understand how each child learns. Children don’t disappear into a crowd; they are noticed from day one. And this individual attention and attention to their emotional well-being becomes the foundation for strong academic performance in every subject and phase.

January Sets the Tone for Academic Success

In the MPS High school we start the academic year on a social note with our annual Paarl/Breede River outing followed by a camping experience for each of the grades – very few schools these days are able to offer your child a camping experience. These outings and camps are more than just social outings and are designed to create new friendships, companionship, foster a sense of belonging and build some resilience for the academic year ahead.

The first term is particularly important for establishing:

1. Learning Confidence
Children who feel supported and understood early in the year are more willing to take academic risks, answering questions, trying new challenges, and pushing themselves further.

2. Strong Work Habits
Daily routines, organisation skills, and classroom expectations all settle in quickly during January. A stable environment helps learners build good habits that carry into every term.

3. Foundational Skills
From reading readiness in the early grades to subject-specific foundations in the senior phase, what happens in January shapes a learner’s ability to progress confidently as the curriculum deepens.

Because MPS offers a calm, spacious, rural setting combined with intentional, high-touch teaching, learners are able to start strong and maintain academic momentum throughout the year.

How Parents Can Support a Smooth Start

Alongside a strong school environment, small adjustments at home can make a big difference. Parents can help their children settle into the new year by:

Establishing consistent routines at home

Talking openly about expectations and goals

Creating a quiet, device-free space for daily reading or revision

Staying connected with teachers during the first few weeks

Giving children time to decompress after school

Setting aside quality one-on-one time with your child/children.

Working together in partnership at home and at school, strengthens a child’s confidence, readiness to learn and their emotional resilience for the year ahead.

See the MPS Environment in Action at our First Open Day of 2026

If you’re exploring future schooling options or considering a change for your child, the best way to understand the MPS difference is to see our beautiful farm setting, the classrooms and unique teaching methodology and approach in person.

Our next Open Day takes place on Saturday, 21 February 2026, where families can meet our teachers, walk through our learning spaces, and experience firsthand how our small classes , the Keller teaching methodology and personalised teaching create the ideal foundation for academic excellence as required by the IEB curriculum.

Enrolments are open all year, and we currently have space available in selected grades for 2026.

A Strong Start Leads to a Strong Year

When learners begin the year in a safe and supportive environment filled with individual attention, clear routines, and space to grow, learning becomes a joy and not a task. January is more than the start of a timetable; it’s the beginning of a meaningful learning journey.
At MPS, that journey is shaped with intention, care, and a commitment to every child’s success.

As online schooling grows in popularity, many parents are understandably drawn by the promise of flexibility, convenience and modern education. Yet, behind that appealing surface lies two critical considerations – registration and accreditation.

The Hidden Risk of Online Schools

Several articles recently have warned parents of many online schools in South Africa that are operating without formal registration and accreditation for nationally‑recognised qualifications.
Pertinent to our discussion are:

https://mybroadband.co.za/news/security/616433-warning-to-people-using-online-schools-in-south-africa.html)

https://www.citizen.co.za/fourways-review/news-headlines/2025/11/13/department-of-education-confirms-glenferness-school-is-illegal/

Without proper registration and accreditation:

The school is operated unlawfully.

A learner’s qualification may not be accepted by tertiary institutions.

Parents’ time and their money invested in the child’s education will be wasted.

The regulatory oversight is not unclear – all schools (public or private) must be registered with the Department of Basic Education and have an EMIS number.

Private or Independent schools must further be accredited by Umalusi.

In some cases learners were registered for examination centres that turned out not to exist.

These risks make being registered and accreditation a non‑negotiable when choosing a school for your child.

Why In‑Person Education Matters

In our earlier blog, “Online vs. In Person: Why Face‑to‑Face Education Matters in a Digital World” (read it here: https://melkbosprivate.co.za/online-vs-in-person-why-face-to-face-education-matters-in-a-digital-world/) we explored many of the advantages that in‑person schooling brings, which pure online models cannot fully replicate:

Social and emotional development: When children are in a physical school environment they interact with peers and teachers, learning to collaborate, communicate and form meaningful relationships.

Immediate, personalised support: In a classroom setting, a teacher can read non‑verbal cues, spot when a learner is struggling, and intervene right away.

Structured routines & balanced life: Having a daily schedule, moving between classes, having breaks and being part of a community helps learners develop time‑management and discipline.

Access to real‑world resources: Laboratories, sports fields, arts and music rooms — these resources support deeper learning experiences beyond what many online systems offer.

A sense of belonging and community: Being “part of something” – a school with Christian values and a supportive culture – nurtures learners in ways that remote schooling can’t replicate.

At MPS, we integrate the best of modern teaching practices with high‑touch personal care. Our learners don’t just cover the curriculum — they grow as individuals in a strong community.

Registration and Accreditation: A Step Towards Quality and Security

When evaluating schooling options, parents should keep these questions in mind:

Is the school accredited to deliver a nationally recognised curriculum and a National Senior Certificate (NSC) qualification?
Does the school have an EMIS registration number?
If a Private or Independent school – has the school been accredited by Umalusi?
Is an approved curriculum being followed that is widely accepted by tertiary bodies and future employers?
What are the trade‑offs? Flexibility may be appealing but at what cost to recognition, socialisation, teacher support and environment?

Registration and Accreditation is far more than a formal ‘ticking of the box’ – it is a regulatory requirement. It signals that a school meets standards of quality and that your child’s future is being safeguarded.

Why MPS is a Reliable Choice

At MPS, we take registration, accreditation and quality seriously.

Our registration and accreditation details are as follows:

Pre-school WCED registration number – 13/1/4/H 2021

Grade R to 12 – EMIS registration no 0132008331

IEB registration and certification numbers EMIS – 0132008331 and Centre no 11548

Umalusi accreditation reference number – 18 SCH 01 00595

We offer:

Accredited qualifications, recognised nationally.

An approved curriculum that balances academic excellence with personal growth.

Small class sizes and individual attention — helping each learner to thrive.

A nurturing environment rooted in Christian values, where each child is known and supported.

Best of all, enrolments at MPS are open all year round. If you’re planning ahead or want to ensure your child attends a registered and accredited institution for 2026, now is a great time to explore our campus, meet our teachers and secure your child’s place.

While fully online schooling can have its place as a supplement, the current registration and accreditation landscape in South Africa presents significant risks for parents and learners. At MPS, we place the highest value on legal compliance, quality, recognition and true educational growth, not just convenience.

If you’re considering the schooling path for your child for 2026, now is the perfect moment to see how MPS stands apart and why an accredited, registered , in‑person education remains the safest and most enriching choice – Contact MPS today!

As the school year draws to a close, exam season brings its fair share of nerves, late-night revision sessions, and mixed emotions – not only for learners, but for parents too. Once the exams are over, the wait for results can feel just as stressful.

At MPS, we believe that success is about more than marks. It’s about effort, growth, and the character built along the way. With a little encouragement, structure, and faith, parents can help their children face both exams and results season with confidence and calm.

Here are a few practical tips to help you walk this journey with your child, before and after the results come in.

1. Focus on Effort, Not Just Results

Before, during, and after exams, keep celebrating the effort your child puts in. Acknowledge their discipline, courage, and perseverance, these are the building blocks of lifelong learning.
At MPS, we remind our learners that while marks matter, they don’t define a person’s worth or potential. The important thing is that they gave their best and grew along the way.

2. Create Calm Before and Amidst the Storm

A peaceful, positive environment at home helps learners stay focused and less anxious. Encourage short breaks, balanced routines, and a moment of quiet prayer before study time.
Children often mirror the mood of their home. If you stay calm, reassuring, and hopeful, they’re more likely to approach both exams and results with that same peace.

3. Keep Faith at the Centre

When stress levels rise, faith brings perspective. Remind your child that their value is not determined by a number, but by who they are, wonderfully made and loved by God.

At MPS, we encourage learners to lean on verses like Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It’s a reminder that strength, peace, and perseverance come from Him, especially in challenging moments.

4. Talk Openly About Feelings and Expectations

As the time for receiving results and reports approaches, your child may feel anxious, even if they’ve done their best. Create space for honest conversations. Ask how they’re feeling, listen carefully, and remind them that one report doesn’t reflect their full potential.

If they’re disappointed, help them see it as a learning experience – a chance to identify where to improve next year. Encouragement and empathy will always have a more lasting impact than criticism.

5. Celebrate Growth and Small Victories

Whether the results are what they hoped for or not, take time to reflect on how far your child has come. Every challenge faced, skill learned, or fear overcome is a victory worth recognising.
We value these moments of reflection as they build resilience, gratitude, and humility in our learners, preparing them for life beyond the classroom.

6. Keep Perspective and Keep the Conversation Going

Exams and results are just one chapter in your child’s learning journey. Encourage them to set new goals for the year ahead, but remind them to rest, enjoy the holidays, and be proud of their progress.

A supportive word, a shared prayer, or a simple “I’m proud of you” can go a long way toward restoring confidence and motivation for the year to come.

Finishing the Year Strong

“As parents, we want our children to do their best, but even more importantly, we want them to grow into grounded, confident, and compassionate individuals. That’s what we strive for every day at Melkbosstrand Private School,” says Mr Allan Norton, Head of Intermediate, Senior & FET phases at MPS.

Our small classes, caring teachers, and Christ-centred approach ensure that every learner is seen, supported, and encouraged, not just in exam season, but throughout the year.

Enrolments are open all year round so come and pay us a visit and discover how your child can thrive academically, emotionally, and spiritually at Melkbosstrand Private School.

Spring is a season of growth, renewal, and fresh opportunities. At Melkbosstrand Private School (MPS), we see that same spirit of growth in our learners every day. Just as flowers bloom with the right care and conditions, children thrive when they are placed in an environment that nurtures perseverance, curiosity, and confidence.

As parents, you want your child not only to achieve academically but also to develop resilience; the ability to face challenges, overcome setbacks, and keep striving forward. That’s why MPS intentionally cultivates what is known as a growth mindset: the belief that abilities and talents can be developed through effort, encouragement, and a love of learning.

Why a Growth Mindset Matters for Your Child

Children with a growth mindset are more willing to take on challenges and less likely to give up when things get tough. Instead of thinking, “I can’t do this” or “I’ll never be good at this,” they learn to say, “I can’t do this yet.”

This simple shift changes everything. Learners begin to:

Persevere through difficulties, tackling math problems or reading challenges with determination instead of frustration.

Stay curious and engaged – asking questions, trying new approaches, and exploring ideas without fear of failure.

Celebrate effort as much as results, all the while learning that progress and persistence are just as important as achievement.

This mindset prepares children not only for academic success but also for lifelong adaptability and confidence.

How MPS Fosters Growth in Every Child

At MPS, our approach goes beyond traditional academics. Every part of school life – from lessons to playground moments – is an opportunity to practice perseverance and positive thinking.

Here’s how we are able to encourage growth in meaningful ways:

Small class sizes: Teachers can give individual attention, helping each child set achievable goals and celebrate small wins.

Supportive feedback: Instead of focusing only on right or wrong answers, teachers encourage effort, persistence, and trying again.

Christian principles in action: Learners are reminded that patience, kindness, and faith build the foundation for courage and resilience.

Opportunities to try and fail safely: Whether it’s tackling a science project, performing in the school play, or learning a new skill in sport, children are encouraged to stretch themselves, make mistakes, and learn from them.

As MPS’ Head of Intermediate and High School phases, Mr Allan Norton puts it: “When children know they are seen, valued, and supported, they develop the confidence to take ‘risks’ in their learning – and that’s when growth really happens.”

The development of this growth mindset begins at Noah’s Ark (MPS Pre-Primary) and the process continues throughout the grades and phases. “We believe that just like the flowers and trees in spring, our little learners are always growing and blooming. Spring reminds us that with patience, care, and encouragement, every child can flourish in their own time,” says Mrs Antoinette Gauchè, head of ECD and Foundation phases at MPS.
“We encourage a growth mindset by teaching children that mistakes help us learn, and that trying again makes us stronger. Just as a seed needs sunshine, water, and love to grow, our learners need support, practice, and positive words to blossom into their best selves.”

Character and Mindset: Growing Tomorrow’s Changemakers

Academic results are important as is reflected in our faultless academic record,, but at MPS we believe that success is measured also by the kind of people our learners become. By combining Christian principles with a growth mindset, we prepare children to be thoughtful, compassionate, and resilient, all qualities that the world needs in its future leaders.

This approach helps children understand that:

Mistakes are not failures, but stepping stones.

Effort is a reflection of character, not weakness.

Growth happens when faith, perseverance, and curiosity come together.

When learners carry these lessons beyond the classroom, they are better prepared to lead with empathy, solve problems creatively, and make a positive difference in their communities.

What Parents Notice at Home

The growth mindset doesn’t stay at school, it comes home too. Parents often share how they see their children applying these lessons in everyday life:

“My child has started saying, ‘I’ll try again’ instead of getting upset when something feels hard.”

“I’ve noticed more confidence… they are willing to try new things, even when they’re unsure.”

“MPS has given my child both the academic skills and the emotional resilience to believe in themselves.”

These stories affirm what we see every day: that when children are nurtured in a safe, supportive, values-driven environment, they flourish both academically and personally.

A Season of Growth, All Year Round

Spring reminds us of the beauty of growth and renewal but at MPS, that spirit is alive in every season. Each day offers children the chance to grow in knowledge, character, and confidence.

“At Noah’s Ark (MPS Pre-Primary), we believe that just like the flowers and trees in spring, our little learners are always growing and blooming. Spring reminds us that with patience, care, and encouragement, every child can flourish in their own time,” says Mrs Gauchè.

“We encourage a growth mindset by teaching children that mistakes help us learn, and that trying again makes us stronger. Just as a seed needs sunshine, water, and love to grow, our learners need support, practice, and positive words to blossom into their best selves.”

By weaving together the timeless strength of Christian principles and the proven power of a growth mindset, Melkbosstrand Private School ensures that learners are not only well-prepared for exams, but also equipped for life.

Enrolments are open all year round. If you’re looking for a school where your child will be encouraged to persevere, stay curious, and thrive in both character and academics, Melkbosstrand Private School is ready to welcome your family – make your appointment today.

Online schooling has gained considerable attention in recent years, often promoted as a flexible and modern alternative to traditional classrooms. While it can be a valuable option in certain circumstances, such as the Covid pandemic, the advantages of face-to-face education remain unmatched, particularly when it comes to a child’s overall growth and well-being. At Melkbosstrand Private School (MPS), we believe that learning is most powerful when it happens in person, within a supportive, engaging, and connected community. In this article, we explore the many benefits experienced at MPS in terms of in-person learning as compared to online schooling.

1. Enhanced Social Interaction and Emotional Development

One of the most significant advantages of face-to-face schooling is the opportunity for children to engage with their peers, teachers, and other members of the school community. Social interaction is crucial for developing communication skills, empathy, and emotional intelligence. In a MPS classroom setting, children learn to navigate friendships, resolve conflicts, learn resilience and collaborate on projects, all skills that are difficult to replicate in an online environment.

Furthermore, in-person schooling provides a structured environment where students receive immediate feedback from teachers, allowing for real-time adjustment and growth. This direct engagement is essential for implementing intervention where necessary, developing confidence and a sense of belonging.

2. Improved Focus and Reduced Distractions

For many children, home can be filled with distractions, from noisy siblings and household chores to the lure of gadgets and television. Online schooling requires a high level of self-discipline and concentration that can be challenging for younger and even older students, who may struggle to stay focused without direct supervision. At MPS face-to-face schooling provides a more structured and controlled environment conducive to learning, where distractions are minimised, and students can concentrate on their studies.

3. Supportive Learning Environment and Individual Attention

In classroom setting at MPS, thanks to the small class sizes, teachers can more easily gauge a student’s understanding of the material and emotional well-being. They can pick up on non-verbal cues, such as emotional stress, confusion or frustration, that may not be apparent in an online classroom. This enables teachers to provide immediate, personalised support to students who need it, ensuring no child is left behind.

Additionally, face-to-face schooling offers access to various support systems, including special needs education, extracurricular activities, and counselling services, that are often less accessible in a virtual environment.

4. Balanced Routine and Time Management

Online schooling often blurs the lines between study time and leisure, making it challenging for both children and parents to maintain a balanced and structured routine. At MPS face-to-face schooling offers a structured timetable that helps instil discipline, time management, and organisational skills. This structure extends beyond the classroom, as children learn to juggle homework, sports, and extracurricular activities within a set schedule, laying a solid foundation for future success.

For parents, a predictable school routine also means clearer boundaries between work and home life, reducing stress and promoting a healthier work-life balance.

5. Physical Activity and Wellbeing

Physical activity has been proven to be an integral part of a child’s fine and gross motor skills development. At MPS in-person schooling ensures that children participate in physical education classes, sports, and other outdoor activities. These activities are vital for building motor skills, maintaining physical health, and enhancing mental well-being. The sedentary nature of online schooling can limit opportunities for physical activity, potentially leading to a sedentary lifestyle and associated health issues.

6. Access to Resources and Facilities

Attending school at MPS means children are given access to a wide range of educational resources and facilities that may not be available at home. This includes libraries, science labs, sports fields, art studios, and music rooms. These facilities provide children with the opportunity to explore different interests, engage in hands-on learning, and develop a well-rounded skill set.

7. Stronger School-Parent Partnerships

We believe that face-to-face schooling fosters stronger relationships between parents and teachers, facilitating open communication and collaboration. Parents can engage more actively in their child’s education by attending school academic and sport events, parent-teacher meetings, and volunteering opportunities. These interactions help build trust, relationships and ensure that both parties work together to support the child’s growth and development.

8. Emotional and Psychological Support

The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns were challenging for everyone, especially children, who may have experienced feelings of isolation, anxiety, or depression during prolonged separation from their friends and teachers. At MPS our school community offers a Christian-based support network where children can share their experiences one-on-one and receive emotional support. Being part of a school community and maintaining regular contact with peers can significantly enhance a child’s emotional resilience and overall well-being.

9. Reduced Screen Time

The dangers of excessive screen time are yet to be determined and with online schooling comes increased screen time, which have already been linked to various health concerns, including eye strain, poor posture, and sleep disturbances. At MPS our in-person schooling combined with our Keller Education methodology naturally limits the amount of time children spend in classes, in front of screens, promoting healthier habits and reducing the risk of these health issues.

10. Fostering Community and a Sense of Belonging

At MPS we know from experience that in-person schooling cultivates a sense of community and belonging that is harder to establish in an online environment. Schools often serve as the centre of a community, where students, parents, and teachers come together to celebrate achievements, participate in events, and support one another. This sense of connection is integral to the development of a child’s identity and values.

“When it comes to all the points listed above, a school like Melkbosstrand Private School, rooted in a Christian foundation that promotes small class sizes, an alternative Keller Education teaching methodology, love for nature, compassion, and service to others, is of particular value,” says Oloff Dreyer, CEO of MPS.
“Offering High-Touch Education in a High Tech world and a supportive rural environment, the school’s focus emphasises individualised attention, nurturing the whole child through a combination of academic excellence, Christian values, and personal growth,” he adds.
“Here, students benefit from being part of a close-knit community where their unique needs are recognised and supported by dedicated teachers and staff,” concludes Mr Dreyer.

Countering the Push for Online Schooling

In recent months, there has been renewed advocacy for online schooling as the “future” of education, often highlighting convenience, flexibility, and technology integration as its primary strengths. While these benefits may sound appealing in theory, they do not outweigh the developmental, social, and emotional gaps that a purely virtual model can leave unaddressed, particularly for younger learners.

Many of these arguments overlook the fact that education is more than the transfer of knowledge and information; it is about building relationships, monitoring emotional well-being, developing resilience, and learning through shared human experiences. Skills such as empathy, teamwork, conflict resolution, and leadership flourish best in face-to-face settings where children engage daily with teachers and peers. Even the most advanced online platforms cannot replicate the subtle, non-verbal cues that help teachers tailor their approach in the moment, nor can they replace the vibrancy and variety of hands-on learning.

Online schooling also places a heavy burden on parents to facilitate and monitor learning, which can strain home routines and blur work–family boundaries. In contrast, in-person education, especially in a high-touch environment like Melkbosstrand Private School provides a structured, nurturing space where qualified and trained educators can give immediate, personalised and emotional support, while parents can focus on their own commitments knowing their child’s development is in expert hands.

In short, while technology will always play a role in modern education, the idea that online schooling should replace traditional classrooms overlooks the deep, multifaceted benefits that come from learning together in person, benefits that form the cornerstone of our approach at MPS.

“This personalised approach to education ensures that every student receives the support they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The school’s serene farm setting provides a peaceful and inspiring learning environment, further enhancing the advantages of in-person schooling,” says Mr Allan Norton, Head of Intermediate, Senior and FET phases at MPS.

While online schooling can be a useful tool in specific contexts and circumstances , we believe the advantages of face-to-face schooling for children and parents at MPS are clear. As we move forward, it is essential to recognise the value of face-to-face education in shaping the future of our children, ensuring they grow into well-rounded, resilient individuals ready to face the world with confidence -that is why we Raise and Release Changemakers – the future leaders of tomorrow!

Across South Africa, thousands of parents are gripped annually by very real concern: Will my child have a place at school next year? What was once a time of excitement and planning has, for many families, become a season of anxiety and uncertainty. The national school placement crisis is not just a headline – it’s a daily reality. And for parents trying to make the best choice for their child, the options appear to be shrinking fast.

The Facts: A System Under Strain

South Africa’s public education system is buckling under the pressure of lack of new schools, overcrowding, poor infrastructure, and limited teaching resources. In provinces like Gauteng and the Western Cape, there are reports of schools reaching capacity after the conclusion of 1st placement process months before the academic year begins have become all too common. In January 2025, the Western Cape Education Department confirmed that over 3 698 learners were still unplaced a week before the academic years was to commence. Similarly, Gauteng saw a flood of late applications as desperate parents scrambled for remaining spots in already full schools.

What’s causing the crisis? A combination of access and failure of the on-line registration system, migration between provinces, and a shortage of new schools and qualified educators. Even as the government works to expand access, the system simply can’t keep up with the demand – especially in high-growth areas.

The Pressure on Parents: From Choice to Compromise

Traditionally, parents would shortlist a few schools aligned with their values, academic standards, and logistical needs. Today, due to overcrowding many don’t have that luxury. Families are often left with a single option: accept the place offered, even if it’s far from ideal.

This loss of agency and being placed on a waiting list adds emotional strain to an already stressful decision. The uncertainty affects not only the child’s learning journey but also the family’s home life, work schedules, transport arrangements, and peace of mind. For parents who understand how foundational those early school years are, settling for “whatever is available” simply isn’t good enough.

The Importance of Finding the Right School

Education is not one-size-fits-all. Children thrive when placed in environments where they feel valued, safe, seen, uplifted and supported. A rushed , compromised or non-preferred school placement can have long-term effects on a child’s academic performance, self-esteem, and love of learning.

That’s why, even in the face of placement panic, finding the right school vs. just any school, remains critical.

A Way Forward

At MPS, we understand the pressure parents are facing. That’s why we’re committed to offering an alternative: a space where children are more than just numbers, and where learning is personal, intentional, and joyful.

Here’s what we offer:

Year-round /every day enrolment process – results within 5 days no need to wait months for placement results

Small class sizes for individual attention

A Christian, values-based approach that supports both academic and personal growth

A peaceful, farm-based environment just outside Cape Town – ideal for focused learning

A strong sense of community where every family is known and every child is nurtured

“As we proudly celebrate 20 years of educational excellence this year, MPS remains deeply committed to providing an optimal environment for growth – one that honours each child’s individuality while preparing them for academic success and life beyond the classroom.” says Mr Oloff Dreyer, MPS’ CEO.
Whether your child is just starting out, or you’re seeking a better fit due to a disrupted school placement, we welcome the opportunity to meet you and share how MPS can offer consistency, stability, and excellence.

“The bottom line is that the school placement crisis in South Africa is real. But, in the face of the panic, there are schools like us offering hope and peace for parents. At MPS we stand ready to support families who refuse to settle for less and who are seeking a school that puts children first -always.” added Mr Dreyer..

We highlight, again – Every day is Open Day at MPS and enrolments are open all year round, across all grades. Let us help you find not just a place, but the RIGHT place for your child – contact us today.

Melkbosstrand Private School is celebrating a significant milestone this July – 20 years of shaping young minds and hearts through education rooted in Christian values. Our school, which is located just outside Melkbosstrand, a quaint suburb of Cape Town, has grown from humble beginnings into a place noted for individual attention, academic excellence, and a Christian ethos, ensuring spiritual grounding for its learners.

As we pause to celebrate two decades of MPS, we reflect on the journey that has brought us here. No journey is easy nor smooth and we are grateful for ours having been one paved with dedication, faith, and a deep commitment to “Raising and Releasing Changemakers” of the future.

Melkbosstrand Private School’s four founding members had a dream to establish a Christian-based school that offers a values-driven alternative to mainstream education. This became a reality when the school was officially registered on 25 July 2005 as a Section 21 non-profit company. MPS has remained anchored in its Christian ethos since its inception 20 years ago.

Over the past two decades, Melkbosstrand Private School has celebrated countless memorable moments, both big and small. For the sake of brevity, we’ve included a just a few of the most outstanding moments and milestones:

2005 – The school is registered as an NPC.

2006 – Official opening of the Primary School with 89 learners and a handful of teachers, united by passion and purpose.

2008 – Addition of the High School and Pre-Primary School, known as Noah’s Ark, broadening the school’s educational reach.

2012 – First Grade 12 class matriculates with a 100% pass rate – an achievement and trend that has been proudly upheld year after year.

2013 – The School hall is built and the first MPS High school sports tour to Glenwood House in George.

2015 – MPS’ 10th year celebration with a performance by singer, Heinz Winkler.

2017 – MPS participates in the Parklands College Festival of Music, collaborating with other schools and the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra

2019 – MPS is awarded Umalusi accreditation, ensuring quality assurance in education. MPS proudly takes delivery of its first MPS school bus. Our beautiful mascots – the Lion and the Lamb are introduced. Learners were challenged to design a school mascot in a competition and the winning entry was based on our values at MPS: Christ-centredness, Courage, Respect, Integrity, Innovation and Quality Work.

2021 – Start of our partnership with Keller Education and implementing a unique and different teaching methodology focused on learner and educator welfare. We also enjoyed a fresh new look for MPS with a strategic review of our school’s branding and its value proposition to its clients. This resulted in the #Changemaker positioning and the new brand identity which supports what we are about at the school.

2022 – Pivotal shift from the CAPS curriculum to the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) curriculum. This move positions MPS among a select group of South African schools committed to deeper critical thinking, robust academic standards, and greater learner agency.

2023 – Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) membership – “ And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19

2024 – MPS matric group achieves a 100% pass rate in the first IEB NSC examinations, with a 91.4% Bachelor’s pass rate.

2025 – Awarded Keller Education Flagship school status, one of only 3 schools nationally.

From the very beginning, the school’s unique rural setting, surrounded by a farm and the rolling hills of Melkbosstrand, has allowed learners to experience education beyond the classroom walls. Here, children interact with farm animals, nature, grow in confidence, and develop a strong sense of stewardship and wonder for God’s creation.

“We’ve always believed that learning should be about more than textbooks,” reflects Allan Norton, Head of MPS Intermediate, Senior and FET phases.
“Our setting gives learners space to breathe, to explore, and to discover themselves and their purpose. That’s something no traditional urban school can offer.” adds Mr. Norton.

Looking Ahead: Building the Next 100 Years

As Melkbosstrand Private School celebrates this 20th anniversary, it does so with deep gratitude — to the founding members, current and past headmasters, teachers, learners, parents, and supporters who have walked this journey together.

Plans for the next chapter include:

The prospect of breaking ground on the High school campus.

Continued investment in academic enrichment and modern learning tools,

Strengthening the school’s outreach and community involvement programmes,

Fostering leadership development in learners across all grades,

As we commemorate this special milestone, we are reminded that Melkbosstrand Private School is not just a place of learning, it’s a family. A community where every child is seen, every teacher is valued, and every achievement is shared.

The following quote sums up the MPS approach quite well:

“A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove …. but the world may be different because I was important if the life of a child “
– Forest E. Witcraft, Scouting magazine, October 1950.
